Uhm no, let’s talk about why Neville Longbottom is a beautiful character and why I wish more people admired him.

  • Neville Longbottom came from an emotionally abusive home; he was constantly made to feel as though he was not only good…

you never know when the desire to draw Luna Lovegood is gonna hit you… but it’s useless to fight it.

"i will never understand why harry named one of his kids severus and not remus or sirius"

maybe because he felt it was up to teddy to keep a piece of remus to himself by giving the name to one of his children

maybe because he found another way to show respect towards sirius

maybe because he wasn’t a petty little fuck and decided to raise above it all and acknowledge snape’s sacrifice and the love he had for lily

his first born’s name is james sirius potter. so sirius is definitely there. no need to complain. also: he called his daughter lily luna. luna means moon. pretty obvious symbolism if you ask me.

now, about albus severus potter.

dumbledore and snape are two sides of the same coin. i could write one hundred pages (hell, i did) on literary alchemy and how its subtext is pervasive in the whole harry potter saga, in the plot structure and in the character system as well. the point is: snape was a slytherin with an awful personality but still did good and saved the world. dumbledore was a gryffindor and everyone loved him but in the end we discover his dark side. but just as harry forgives dumbledore for his manipulation he also forgives snape for his abuse. albus severus potter is the incarnation, the living symbol of harry’s power of forgiveness. (you can disagree all you want about who harry should and shouldn’t forgive, or if some of the things dumbledore and snape did are really forgivable, but that’s a matter of personal opinion and not of literary criticism.)

the saga works according to literary alchemy. alchemy was a philosophy/science by which people tried to transform vile metals into gold. obviously it didn’t work but it wasn’t just messing around because people in the middle ages believed that every trasformation in the natural world meant a transformation in the spiritual world (this is called allegoric faith and is typical of the medieval times). this means that if you managed to transform lead into gold you were also able to undergo a process of self-transformation that made your soul better. the metals are only a symbol and a medium for the transmutation of the soul which is the ultimate goal of alchemy.

the alchemical work is divided into three stages:

1) nigredo (black), lead/vile metals, dissolution

2) albedo (white), action of contraries, purification

3) rubedo (red), gold and philosopher’s stone, perfection

the narrative of the harry potter saga works exactly like this (but also the bible works like this, shakespeare’s theatre works like this, the divine comedy works like this, and so on): after the first four novels, which represent the preparation of the instruments in the alchemist’s lab the proper alchemical work can start.

  • order of the phoenix is the dissolution of the hero, because in this book harry loses everything that really matters to him, he feels isolated and alone, hogwarts is ruled by umbridge, he discorvers that his parents weren’t perfect and sirius BLACK dies (nigredo)
  • half-blood prince is the purification of the hero, there is a lot of water (snow and rain, the sea outside the cave and the lake inside of it, the potion dumbledore drinks) which is a symbol of ablution and purification, hermione and ron are opposite and fight all the time, in this book ALBUS (latin for white) dumbledore dies (albedo)
  • deathly hallows is the walk toward perfection. harry struggles with his faith in dumbledore and in his mission. he dies a metaphorical death and he comes back as a christological saviour who now has the necessary knowledge to destroy his enemy. ron and hermione resolve their contrasts and get together. RUBEUS (latin for red) hagrid is captured but not killed, whereas fRED weasley indeed dies but someone with the same name (george and angelina’s son) takes his place, because this last phase is all about rebirth (rubedo)

so albus severus potter is the personification of this process, he is the product of this alchemical work/narrative that has brought harry the means to destroy voldemort and that has enhanced his ability to forgive. albus severus potter is the embodiment of what snape and dumbledore meant to harry, he is a symbol for reconciliation of contrasts, because he has the names of two men that were opposite for many things and the last name of the person who brought them to work together toward the same goal despite their differences.

also, his initials are ASP, like the serpent, and this makes pretty sure that he’ll be sorted into slytherin, ultimately proving that slytherin doesn’t mean evil because it is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our abilities.

and that’s all i have to say about that.

(it’s not, but shhh)

(you can find all this stuff and much more in john granger’s books “how harry cast his spell”, ” unlocking harry potter” and ” the deathly hallows lectures”. more about alchemy and harry potter in “harry potter and history” edited by nancy r. reagin.)

Books Meme: Five friendships
[2/5]  Marauders (art) (from Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling)

“Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people’s business.
Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.
Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.
Mr. Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.”

No really Hermione you’re way better than him

Well actually Harry produced a powerful patronus at only 13 years old, cheated death twice, and destroyed the most terrible dark wizard that ever terrorized anyone ever.

yeah but hermione punched draco in the face

a post about the subtitles on my harry potter vcd

so i found my old vcd-copy of harry potter and the chamber of secrets and… i don’t know what’s more entertaining, the movie or the subtitles.

THE MAGIC BEGINS: A really emotional moment - Lily’s speech & death.

Your mother was there for me at a time when no one else was. Not only was she a singularly gifted witch, she was also an uncommonly kind woman. She had a way of seeing the beauty in others even, and perhaps most especially, when that person couldn’t see it in themselves.” - Remus Lupin.

“There are all kinds of courage,” said Dumbledore, smiling. “It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
